The Tesla Model Y has officially overtaken the Nissan Leaf as Norway’s top-selling electric vehicle (EV) of all time. Since tracking began in 2011, the all-electric crossover has surpassed one of the earliest EV offerings on the market.
After becoming the world’s best-selling vehicle last year, the Model Y is also on track to take the top spot in the United States this year.
Catching up to long-established vehicles like the Nissan Leaf in lifetime sales takes time. The Leaf, being one of the first mass-market EVs, has had a head start, but the newer Model Y has steadily closed the gap.
Recent sales and registration data, as reported by *Electric Drives*, now confirm that the Model Y has surpassed the Nissan Leaf in Norway. Since its debut in the country, Tesla has sold 59,775 Model Y units, compared to the Leaf’s 58,860 as of September.
For the first nine months of this year, the Model Y remains Norway’s best-selling EV, according to EU-EV sales data. It leads with 12,578 units sold, well ahead of competitors like the Volvo EX30 (5,318 units) and Volkswagen ID.4 (4,944 units). Tesla’s other popular model, the Model 3, holds fourth place with 4,652 sales. Over the years, the Model 3 has sold 43,910 units, making it the third-best-selling EV in Norway’s history.
The Tesla Model Y’s popularity continues to grow globally, dominating various markets and securing its position as the best-selling vehicle in a calendar year. It’s likely that the Model Y will achieve a similar milestone once again this year.
