Tesla and GM join forces to boost EV charging access in North America

Tesla has reached a deal with General Motors to let them use its Supercharger Network across 12,000 locations in North America starting in 2024. GM will also adopt Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) connector for its EVs from 2025 onwards and provide a special adapter for existing cars as early as 2024.

This is a major step for both companies to expand charging options for EV drivers and to promote a common charging standard in North America. GM is the second automaker to partner with Tesla on this front, following Ford's agreement in June.

GM said this collaboration is part of its vision to produce millions of high-quality EVs across different segments and price points, while creating an ecosystem that will accelerate mass EV adoption. "This collaboration is a key part of our strategy and an important next step in quickly expanding access to fast chargers for our customers. Not only will it help make the transition to electric vehicles more seamless for our customers, but it could help move the industry toward a single North American charging standard," said Mary Barra, GM's Chair and CEO.

Initially, GM drivers will need an adapter to access Tesla Superchargers, but GM will start making its EVs with the NACS inlet for direct access. Tesla Superchargers will also be integrated into GM's vehicle and mobile apps, allowing drivers to locate, pay for, and start charging at the world's largest EV charging network.

Let us know what your thoughts are on Tesla opening up its superchargers. Hopefully with the adoption of this standard also comes an adoption on location of charge port. This is important to reduce chaos at supercharger stations.
